Project: Railway depot
Location: Farnham, United Kingdom
Year: 2010
Duration: 5 weeks
Technology: DEEP INJECTION & SLAB LIFTING
Stabilization of the foundation under the railway slabs
Problem
Settlement of foundation slabs in the railway depot
Solution
The base under the slabs has been stabilized and the height differences have been eliminated
Problem
Settlement of the base slabs at a railway depot in Farnham, near London, threatened to disrupt railway operations in south‑eastern England. The 60‑year‑old slabs had been gradually settling for many years due to embankment consolidation, drainage problems and erosion, as well as increased loads from modern rolling stock. The problem reached a critical point when 6,000 square metres of service area, vital for operations, were at risk of closure due to unsafe foundation conditions. URETEK was chosen as the contractor to solve the problem without disrupting scheduled train traffic.

Goals
Stabilise the foundation beneath the slabs and level the railway track by lifting the settled sections.
Solution
Technology applied:
The Deep Injection method and Slab Lifting slab levelling were applied over an area of 6,000 square metres.

Result
Within 5 weeks, the foundation beneath the slabs was stabilised over an area of more than 6,000 square metres, and height differences were eliminated within tolerances of +/-10 mm over an area of more than 10 square metres, without stopping depot operations.
