Project: Scarborough Lighthouse
Location: Scarborough, United Kingdom
Year: 2010
Duration: 2 days
Technology: DEEP INJECTION
Stabilization and filling of voids in the base of the current Scarborough Lighthouse
Problem
The blurred base of the voids
Solution
The existing voids were filled and the foundation structure was stabilized
Scarborough Lighthouse was originally built in 1804 and later rebuilt in 1931.
Problem
During the reconstruction, it was discovered that the lighthouse was built on a pier constructed using sheet piles. However, over time, the filler between the piles had been washed out and voids had appeared in it. This jeopardised the integrity of the entire structure.

Goal
The project required URETEK specialists to fill the voids between the sheet piles and stabilise the existing foundation. The work was carried out underwater at depths of up to 3 metres along a perimeter 30 metres long.
The project in detail
Technology applied:
The Uretek team used its innovative method of injecting geopolymer resin as a void filler and consolidator of the existing filler, creating a water barrier insensitive to aggressive environments and at the same time a strong foundation for the structures.
Solution
Along the 30‑metre section of the pier, specialists injected Uretek resins at points located at depths of 1 metre and 2 metres below the water surface. The project was complicated by the fact that the voids were underwater. This required a professional diving team to help facilitate the injection process. The team of technicians developed a special waterproof housing that could receive the resins underwater for subsequent injection through 12 mm tubes into the voids. The project was successfully completed within two days. The existing voids were filled and the structure of the pier foundation was stabilised.
