Project: Six-apartment apartment building
Location: Birmingham, United Kingdom
Year: 2014
Duration: 14 days
Technology: DEEP INJECTION
Restoration of the bearing capacity of the foundation of a six-apartment residential building
Problem
Violation of the integrity of the entire structure
Solution
Stabilization (stop) of the object's sinking
A residential house standing on a road in Birmingham was first put into operation in the 17th century. Historically, the end of the road led to a farm and then to a large pond. Over time, the road and the land around it turned into a modern street with houses on both sides. The area where the pond once stood was reclaimed and an apartment building was constructed. Lack of proper attention to the geology and the heavy structure of the building caused settlement.
Problem
The six‑apartment house was settling on one side. This led to a loss of integrity of the entire structure. Cracks could be seen around the entire perimeter of the building, so a long‑lasting solution was required to stop the settlement. Uretek developed a solution that strengthened the foundation soils using geopolymer resin, creating a stable base with the necessary properties.
The project in detail
Technology applied:
To achieve these goals, Uretek used geopolymer resin in the settlement zones to strengthen the soils and prevent further settlement. Expanding URETEK geopolymer resins were injected at points along 101 metres of load‑bearing wall structures. Injection tubes were placed in drilled holes at a depth of 2–3 metres. After injection, the resin expands with enormous force, forming a base for its further use as support for the foundation.
Solution
The work was completed within two weeks. Throughout the project, none of the residents had to leave the property, which is a significant advantage of using the injection process. The foundation soils beneath the property were strengthened and provided with integral support.
